Seminar description: Public health and human rights are two complementary approaches to protecting and promoting human well-being and dignity. Public health addresses the needs of populations and seeks to prevent the spread of disease through reducing the physical, social, and cultural risk factors that increase vulnerability. Enshrined in international law, human rights describe what governments must do to protect their citizenry from harm and create conditions where each individual can achieve his or her full potential. Abuses of human rights have profound effects on health; health policies can directly or indirectly impact adversely on human rights. In this seminar, we explore these interrelationships and examine how the "right to health" is challenged both in war and peace.
